Newspaper article mystery

There is an interesting article in the Marleborough Express of 22 November 1876, which states that "in view of what happened at his former marriage, Mr Greathead, on the day of his wedding took the precaution to secure the protection of the police". Elizabeth was also a widow and had recently arrived from London via Dunedin

What had happened at his previous wedding? I do not know, does anyone else? His first marriage was in England!!!!!!
