I belong to the U3A groups in both our village and a nearby one.
Our neighbouring group have two activities that I am particularly interested in Family History (surprise surprise) and Village Life. This is great fun as we split into groups and each group looked at a particular part of the village. We had the Common. We looked at all the census returns for the Common area and listed the heads of the families and their occupations, trying where possible to link the houses. Then we added to the spreadsheet the plot numbers from the 1842 tithe map and the 1872 Ordnance Survey map. We then walked the Common. I was responsible for producing this on a spreadsheet. Next term we are continuing this exercise.
My local U3A group asked me to produce and maintain a website for them, this progressed to me being their newsletter editor and publicity officer. Quite a responsibility. But great fun. I was then persuaded to run a group on the subject of family history. I have therefore been very busy preparing the first presentation for the September meeting. The subject will be Record keeping
