Many happy returns - 100 years old

The Northern Echo reported on Wednesday 16 December 2015
A MINER who started down a County Durham pit at the age of 14 is celebrating his 100th birthday today (Wednesday, December 16).
Born and bred in Trimdon Colliery, Anthony Greathead spent almost half a century as a pitman - taking voluntary redundancy only to make way for younger lads at a time when the mines were closing.
The father-of-three started out in 1929 after leaving school as a teenager and worked at Deafhill Colliery before moving to Trimdon Grange Colliery.
Following the closure of the Trimdon Grange pit, Mr Greathead spent three years on the area salvage team, reclaiming support and machinery for the then National Coal Board.
"When I look back one might say it's with a rose-tinted romance," said Mr Greathead. "It was dark but it was a good life because everybody knew they had to work for a living.
"There was nothing easy about it - just something which, if you were prepared to do and try, you were alright.
"It didn't do you any harm really and you thought you'd had it rough because the job wasn't very pleasant some times.
"There were good times and rough times. In the pit you were all mates."
As part of his working life in 1960, Mr Greathead took on the role of finance secretary for Trimdon Grange Miners' Lodge where he stayed in office for eight years - completing quarterly accounts with the help of his late wife Jane Ann.
He was also a delegate for Trimdon Village Working Man's Club.
After his retirement, Mr Greathead, who now lives in Trimdon Village, dedicated his time to gardening and writing.
But during the past six years, following a stroke, the grandfather-of-three has focused on the latter and keeps a daily journal where he analyses the news alongside newspaper cut outs and writes hymns, poems and songs.
His daughter Anne Robson, who lives in Canada, said: "He has amazing handwriting from the first word to the last and still has a thirst for knowledge.
"We are so proud of how he has kept his mind so busy and his sense of humour well developed."
National Union of Mineworkers general secretary for the North East area, Davie Hopper, congratulated Mr Greathead on his 'milestone' age.
"In my time I've never known a miner get to that age," he said. "It's pretty unique because of the conditions that they worked in.
"It was a very difficult job where accidents and fatalities were fairly regular.

"It's a great achievement and he must have had a strong constitution, it's remarkable."
The last deep coal mine in the country, Kellingley Colliery, in North Yorkshire, will close on Friday.

Many Congratulations Anthony, and I hope you had a fantastic birthday

Greathead Excise men

I discovered a while ago I had Excise men in my One-Name Study so I went to TNA and went through the 750 microfiche index books to find my Greathead entries. Last year I discovered these index books had been digitally copied by TNA and were available to download for free. Just finished this task phew and only missed two entries. Mighty pleased to have completed the task and amazed I only missed two on microfiche records

Website updated 1 October 2015

Last night I updated the website.  Lots of new information.

Laterly I have been focusing on attempting to find where the Greathead's originated from, so have been investigating the families into which they married.  Many cross marriages with the Whitelock's from Swaledale.

They say we should hatch, match and dispatch all our entries, so the earlier part of the year I was doing just that.  Adding dates of death or at least years of death

Next month I will continue to investigate wills and other data I collected a while ago.  Re-looking at this information, knowing what I now know, can make me look at it in a completely different light and make much more sense of it.

Website updated 1 September 2015

Once again the website has been updated.  I am continually delighted to receive emails with information from people who so willingly share details about their branches of the family.

It is difficult sometimes to get modern relationships correct and complete and of course details on living people stay on my personal database.  But these are so essential, as collecting this sort of information once they have died is more complicated!!!

So keep the information coming please.

I am also delighted to announce I took a Family Finder DNA and the results are now back and will I hope be the beginnings of other females going down this route to see if we can solve some mysteries.  One lady in Australia has a Family Finder kit winging it's way to her as I write. Thanks Jennifer. I have one YDNA set of results also and hope to persuade another Greathead male on Monday.

So if you are interested in helping to discover whether the various Greathead branches we have already documented come from the same root stock please let me know.  The Guild are selling YDNA kits for £80 and FF DNA kits for £60.

I live in hope............

Website updated - 1 July 2015

Website updated and lots of new information and pictures to be found on the website, do explore.  Start looking at Recent updates this will give you a clue to the work I have been doing this last month.

Exciting news I have just taken a Family Finder DNA test and hopefully when I get the results back I will be able to explore new angles.

I hope this now enthuses some men and women to offer to take the simple test.  The cost through the Guild of One-Name Studies who use Family Tree DNA is £80 for YDNA test and £60 for the Family Finder DNA test.  Men can only take the YDNA test but both men and women can take the Family Finder test.

Come on lets break down some of those brick walls and confirm some relationships.  You can only do so much with paper trails.  Find more details or write to me

Website updated 1 May 2015

Thanks to a few people who have send me some amendments.  I hope I have made the corrections accurately.

Added some entries that appeared in the New South Wales Gazette and a great photograph for George Greathead from his jail records

Thanks to Jennifer the mystery about Ruth, wife of Thomas Greathead has been solved.  She was spinster when she married.

Of course there are many other brickwalls that will hopefully tumble soon.  Do you have the key to start the discovery or maybe an additional piece to add to this jigsaw.

I would love to hear from you

Website updated 1 January 2015

Happy new year to everyone.  The website has just been updated. With so many new primary databases becoming available it is difficult to concentrate on one particular family.  I am hoping in this new year to make big inroads into breaking brickwalls down.

If you have some information do contact me and together maybe.....

Look forward to meeting new and old friends in 2015
